Airport Transfer Picton: Which Airport

Raewyn McCardell·5 October 2026

There is no airport at Picton. That one fact decides most of what follows, and almost nothing you will read online says it plainly. Search for an airport transfer Picton option and you are shown shuttle companies, a rental car depot page and a Facebook forum thread, all of them quietly assuming you already know which airport you are arriving at.

You may not. Three gateways realistically serve Picton, and the choice between them changes the shape of your whole travel day, not just the fare.

Airport transfer Picton: the three gateways, honestly compared

Marlborough Airport (BHE), Blenheim. Roughly 30 km from Picton, around 30 minutes on State Highway 1 through Tuamarina and the Para wetlands. This is the default and usually the right answer. Marlborough Airport's own transport page lists a one-way shuttle at around $35 and quotes 15 to 20 minutes for the Blenheim town leg, which is a useful benchmark for the shorter run.

Nelson Airport (NSN). Roughly 110 km and around two hours, over the Whangamoa and Rai saddles on State Highway 6. The road is good but it is not fast, it is tight in sections, and in heavy rain or fog it is slower again. People book into Nelson because the fare looked better, then discover they have bought two hours of winding road at the end of a travel day.

Wellington Airport (WLG), plus a ferry. WLG to the Interislander or Bluebridge terminal is a short run across the city. The crossing itself is roughly three and a half hours, and that is before check-in and loading. Call it most of a day door to door. It is the right choice when you want the Sounds entrance by water or you are moving a large group with freight, and the wrong one when you simply need to be in Blenheim by lunchtime.

And the fourth option most pages miss. Sounds Air flies into Picton itself. The airline publishes its own Picton shuttle at $25 per person each way, with pickups around 50 minutes before departure. For a solo traveller with a soft schedule that is hard to beat.

What each gateway costs you in time

Time, not price, is the real currency here, and priced on the clock an airport transfer Picton booking looks very different from the way the search results present it. From BHE you are checked into Picton or out at Waikawa inside about forty minutes of wheels down. From NSN, add two hours and a mountain road. From WLG, add a ferry crossing you do not control.

We make that calculation with clients constantly, because Legacy EPT covers all three gateways under one booking. That is the practical argument for a single operator: the same account, the same employed and uniformed drivers, the same dispatch, whether your flight lands at Blenheim, Nelson or Wellington. You are not assembling three local suppliers and hoping the handover works.

The ferry timing nobody absorbs

An airport transfer Picton job that connects to a Cook Strait sailing is a different kind of job. Interislander and Bluebridge both run multiple crossings daily, timetables shift seasonally and sailings are weather-dependent, so always check the current schedule rather than a figure in an article. What does not change is the margin you need either side.

Foot passengers are asked to be at the terminal well before departure, and vehicle loading closes earlier again. A shared shuttle that collects you around fifty minutes before its own scheduled departure has no capacity to absorb a flight that lands twenty minutes late. It leaves, and you are on the next one, which on a thin winter timetable can mean several hours.

We monitor flights in real time against the booking and reposition the vehicle, which is the only honest way to protect a ferry connection. On the return leg the same applies in reverse: the Picton terminal empties fast after a sailing, and a group of twelve with luggage standing on Lagoon Road is not in a good negotiating position with the local taxi supply.

Cruise calls and the Sounds

Picton takes cruise calls, and on those days the town's vehicle availability is effectively gone by mid-morning. Shore excursions out to the Marlborough Sounds, the Queen Charlotte Drive, or a cellar-door run into the Wairau Valley need to be committed well ahead, with vehicle size fixed. Our owned European fleet runs from sedans through vans to coaches, so a ship group and a couple travelling privately are handled from the same roster rather than from whatever happens to be free.

Waikawa, the marina, and the lodges further into the Sounds add another layer. Some of those addresses are a long way past the last sealed shoulder, and they are not somewhere to discover your driver has never been. Legacy drivers are employed staff, briefed on the run sheet, and the detail of each location sits with the operation rather than in one person's head.

Booking it so it holds together

Brief an airport transfer Picton job the way we need it and it holds together. Give us the flight number and the airport code, not the town name. BHE, NSN and WLG lead to completely different vehicles, different driver rosters and different lead times. If a ferry is involved, give the sailing you intend to take and let us build the pickup backwards from loading close rather than from the published departure.

For the onward leg west, the companion piece on an airport transfer from Nelson into Abel Tasman covers the NSN side of this corridor in detail. Every region Legacy operates in is listed on the Locations page, and the rest of the regional guides sit on the Blog.

Picton rewards people who plan backwards from the water. Pick the gateway that fits the day you actually have, book the vehicle to the flight number, and the absence of an airport at Picton stops being your problem. Legacy will meet you at whichever of the three you choose.
