Company Shuttle Picton Ferry Runs

Catherine McDougall·6 September 2026

A Cook Strait sailing does not wait for a meeting to finish. That single constraint shapes every serious company shuttle Picton arrangement, and it is the reason corporate transport here behaves differently from transport anywhere else in the country. Miss a departure from the Picton ferry terminal and the next option is not twenty minutes away. It may be hours, and if the strait is behaving badly it may be the following day, with accommodation and rebooked meetings attached.

Search results for the town do not reflect this. They are built almost entirely around visitors: tourist transfers, cycle trail drops, wine tours and cruise arrivals. Useful services, but written for someone whose day is flexible. Legacy EPT works with the other Picton, the one where staff, contractors and executives move on a schedule set by a vessel.

Picton is a logistics node, not just an arrival point

Three networks converge here. Cook Strait ferries link the terminal at Picton with Wellington, a crossing of roughly three and a half hours. Marlborough Airport (BHE) sits just west of Blenheim, around 30 to 40 minutes south by road. And the region's own workforce moves daily between Picton, Waikawa, the marine farms of the Sounds, and the vineyards and processing sites spread across the Wairau Plains.

For an employer, that means the town is a connection point rather than a destination. A technician flying into BHE at midday may need to be on a mid-afternoon sailing. A project team arriving off the ferry needs to be at a Blenheim site inside the hour. Neither is a tourism problem, and neither is well served by a per-seat scheduled van.

Building a company shuttle Picton schedule around sailings

Practical corporate transport here works backwards from the sailing, not forwards from the office. Check-in for vehicles and foot passengers closes well before departure, so a transfer plan needs a buffer built in rather than assumed. Legacy schedules ferry-timed runs against the actual sailing, with a defined arrival target at the terminal and a fallback plan if the inbound leg runs late.

Blenheim to Picton is roughly 29 km, typically around 30 minutes on State Highway 1 in normal conditions. That drive is short enough to feel casual and long enough to ruin a day if it is started ten minutes late. On a contracted company shuttle Picton run, the departure time is set by the sailing and the vehicle is staged early. Real-time flight monitoring covers the BHE leg, so a delayed regional arrival changes the dispatch rather than stranding the passenger.

What happens when a sailing is cancelled

This is the question most transport suppliers avoid and every Marlborough employer should ask. Cook Strait weather cancels and consolidates sailings. When it happens, a group of eight people is suddenly in the wrong town with no plan.

A useful contingency has three parts. First, someone is watching the sailing status rather than waiting for the passengers to notice. Second, there is a decision point agreed in advance: hold in Picton, divert to Blenheim for accommodation, or reroute to BHE for a flight. Third, there is a vehicle available to execute whichever option is chosen, which requires an operator with fleet depth rather than one van already committed elsewhere.

Legacy handles this through digital dispatch and account management. Corporate clients have a named contact who can authorise the change without a chain of phone calls, and the driver on the run is an employee of the same business making that decision, not a subcontractor with a separate schedule to protect.

The Picton, Blenheim and Nelson corridor

Very little Marlborough business stops at the town limits. Nelson is roughly 110 km from Picton, commonly about two hours by road via Havelock and the Rai Valley. Blenheim is half an hour south. Treating those three points as one contracted corridor rather than three separate bookings removes most of the friction from inter-island corporate travel.

That is how Legacy structures it. A single account covers the ferry-timed transfer, the onward leg to a Blenheim vineyard or a Nelson office, and the return, with the vehicle sized to the group instead of the group split across taxis. The fleet runs from sedans through vans to coaches, which matters when a conference group arrives on one sailing and needs to move together.

Vineyard, marine farm and processing site movements

Marlborough's working transport requirements are seasonal in volume but constant in nature. Vintage brings contractors and visiting winemakers who need moving between sites on a schedule that matches no public timetable. Aquaculture operations in the Sounds run early starts out of Picton and Waikawa. Site visits by insurers, auditors and offshore owners land at BHE and need a driver who knows the difference between a Wairau Valley address and a Sounds jetty.

Uniformed, employed drivers matter more in that context than the badge on the vehicle. They are the first person a visiting director meets, and they are the ones who need to know that a Sounds road takes longer than a map suggests.

What to expect from an account-managed operator

If you are comparing suppliers for a company shuttle Picton contract, look for four things: a named account contact, employed rather than subcontracted drivers, a fleet deep enough to absorb a breakdown or a cancelled sailing, and coverage that continues once your people leave Marlborough.

Legacy provides nationwide single-operator coverage across more than fifteen New Zealand locations, listed on Legacy's locations page, with the same driver standards in each. More operational detail on how these runs are built sits on the Legacy blog.

If your team crosses Cook Strait regularly, the schedule is the product. Send us your sailing patterns and site addresses and we will build the runs around them. You can start at wearelegacy.co.nz, or contact the corporate team through wearelegacy.co.nz.
